I had jotted down my reactions to Memoria and Talisman, but never got around to posting them. Thought I should do it before tonight's ep or it would never happen.

First Online Fandom: Blake's 7
Current Online Fandom: Smallville

First Fandom Crush: Mighty Mouse (and I can't believe what sexist trash that show was!)
Current Fandom Crush: Lex Luthor

First Fanfic Pairing You Wrote: Blake/Avon
Last Fanfic Pairing You Wrote: Clark/Lex

Both of the last were tiny drabbles or parts of round robins. I don't really write at all.

You know, this got me thinking about my early fannish interests: Speed Racer, Lidsville, Planet of the Apes (I had a crush on the ape played by Roddy McDowel. How weird is that?)

Anyone ever see a show called The Kids from C.A.P.E.R.? Man was I crazy about that. Or perhaps just crazy.

Does anyone else find it annoying that, when you click on a cut tag, you lose the text="" text that was in the tag? A lot of people use that text for internal headers, but it just disappears when you get the whole entry. Or is there a workaround for that?

A lot of people are quite reasonably outraged at the thought that George Bush and Tony Blair have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. That they even got nominated makes me wonder what other doozies there are among the other nominations.

However, unless the Nobel Committee has been replaced, they are never going to give the prize to Bush. When Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, CNN reported that
"Gunnar Berge, head of the Nobel committee, said: "With the position Carter has taken on this, it can and must also be seen as criticism of the line the current U.S. administration has taken on Iraq."

SV S3

I'm not sure I can come with a list of ten things I am looking forward to about Smallville, but let's see how far I get:

1) Something to wipe from my memory the stilted Clark/Lana scene they showed when TW was on The View.

2) Crazy naked island Lex. Should that count for more than one item?

3) Red Clark

4) Martha doing something other than being pregnant.

5) More creepy Lionel of the sort we saw in the scene with Emily and the bunny.

6) Bo probably having to deal with the fact that he drove Clark away.

7) Finding out who really was behind the plane crash, even if it turns out to be disappointing.

8) Lex dealing with the repercussions of his island stay.

9) Getting back to the idea of the hero/anti-hero stories being intertwined. If we believe the previow of two weeks ago, that is.

10) The real reason I'm looking forward to the season premier: That it will provide inspiration to the many the many fanfic authors who have stopped writing over the summer or have drifted off to other interests.

Hey I made it to ten!

SV musings

attolia: (Default)
I rewatched Exodus the other day and I'm finally ready to post my semi-coherent thoughts about the finale and next season.

Helen:
Helen is obviously involved in the plane crash. The only question is when did she decide to do it? Unless they are going to pull some long term motivation out of a hat, I think she only came to that decision after Lex confessed to breaking into her office.

Although we haven't actually seen her get violent, even in self defense (Precipice), Helen was sent to the same anger management class that Lex had to go to, so she must have issues. Could she be angry enough to want to kill Lex? It is a stretch, but she may feel it is also necessary in order to protect her patients (Clark, Martha) and her research. She has also been approached by Lionel several times for unspecified reasons, which could provide additional motivation.

Lionel:
I think, ultimately, Lionel is behind the crash. We've seen nothing to indicate that Helen has the resources to arrange the crash on her own and it is a Luthor Corp plane provided by Lionel, so he has to be under suspicion.

During this second viewing of Exodus I noticed something interesting. Lionel tells Pete that people are weakest when they are angry. Granted, this is in a scene that has nothing to do with Helen or Lex, but it underscored that he had just had his best opportunity so far to get to Helen.

The real question is, why would he want to kill Lex? We've seen, in Prodigal, that he does care for his son's life, not just in preference to Lucas's but at some risk to his own. What would make him willing to get rid of Lex?

Here, alas, is where I think a Lex clone comes in. Lionel loves the idea of Lex, as his heir, and possibly as Lillian's son, but not so much Lex as Lex himself. He is warped enough that I could easily imagine him transferring that feeling to a duplicate that was closer to his idea of how Lex should be. Given that they have already introduced the idea of cloning in Smallville and cloning has been in Superman canon for a while now, I think this is the direction they may go.

Is it necessarily a disaster? Not if they do it right. They can't truly kill off our Lex and replace him with a conscience-less close without invalidating all the character growth they have had so far to show why Lex goes bad. But what if we had clone!Lex for a little while until real!Lex gets off the island? Again, they would have to be careful how they handled clone!Lex. Giving us a preview of evil!Lex could be fun, but I would like it even more if they could suggest how the evilclone!Lex was not even as bad as future evilmastermind!Lex will be. If the clone were bad, but somewhat stupid, sort of a bizarro!Lex or if Lionel got a chance to see how that wasn't really how he wanted Lex to be, then it could be really interesting.

Sadly, I don't have much faith that M&G will do a good job of implementing this even if this the direction they take. They and I clearly have different ideas about which are the compelling themes to explore on the show. My somewhat pessimistic hope is that SV remains interesting enough to keep the fanfic writers interested.

I've never done one of these before. I was going to speculate on SV but I'm too sleepy now.

1. What's your favorite cheese?
Dill Havarti

2. How long do you hold onto odd socks before giving up on finding their mate?

We have a stray sock drawer, so every often I clean it out and match up pairs. I don't think I've thrown anything out that didn't have holes, though.

3. Who was your favorite musical artist when you were 15? Yes, you can only pick one!

I think it was Queen

4. What shape are your fingernails in right now?

Short and clean

5. Two scoops: of what?

One of coffee oreo and one of Toscanini's hazelnut.

6. What's your earliest memory?

Seeing our blue VW Beetle parked in the driveway of the house we moved into when I was three.

7. When does your pet look funniest?

No pet.

8. What do you collect?

Not sure I collect anything at this point. I'm trying to declutter. Recipes maybe...

9. What's better than sex?

Nothing is better than sex. A ham sandwich is better than nothing, so a ham sandwich is better than sex. QED.

10. What things are you brand-loyal to?

Ghiradelli's ground chocolate. Arm & Hammer unscented detergent. Um. I think that's it

11. Favorite Dr. Seuss book?

The Sneeches and Other Stories. I've always liked "What was I scared of."

The lunch at my niece's bat mitzvah. Acorn squash and wild mushrooms. Sesame noodles. Do caterers ever give out the recipes?

13. Peanut Butter and ________?

That's tough. Robert Frost, maybe, or A.A.Milne.

15. Where are you going on vacation this year?

Maine.

16. If you could change careers tomorrow with no strings attached, what would you be?

Folk singer.

17. Whaddya drive?

Diet coke, but I'm on the wagon until I give birth and possibly not until the kid is weaned.

19. The color of the carpet on your floor?

Blue

20. What's on your walls?

Cobwebs, family photos, random kid artwork.

Some strange caution signs the kids made on the computer: "Caution: beware of cat" and "Caution: don't you dare catch a mouse and eat it." No, we don't have a cat and I'm hoping they will be satisfied with the Fur-real kittens they got recently, for a while, anyway. The mice should be safe at least.

ETA: The End of Hope

Martha was sure it was a girl. Jonathan wanted to be surprised, but Martha took Clark aside and asked him to peek. She managed to hide her disappointment when she learned it was a boy, but it took her several weeks to adjust to the loss of her daughter.

Pictures of Clark as a smiling toddler consoled her and she looked forward again to the birth of the son she knew they all would cherish.

Martha sobs in Jonathan's arms. That baby is gone too. She needs to leave, to go home to Clark and hold her only child.

Loyalty Day

attolia: (Default)
Apparently Loyalty Day is not a recent Bush thing. It originated in the 1930s as an alternative to International Workers' Day which is celebrated by everyone except US and Canada. (And this despite the fact that it commemorates the labor struggle in the US for a shorter workweek.)

So I guess it sometimes just seems that the world is getting worse.

I doubt I'll ever be a writer of long fic. I don't have the patience. I think up long stories in my head, but once I've done that I lose any incentive to write it down or clean up all plot details. However I've thought sometimes of writing down snippets of thing and see where that goes.

Would anyone be interested in seeing those?

A NY Times article mentions "the rejection of Christopher Reeve from a Manhattan jury pool because it was felt that Superman would automatically sway all other jurors."

attolia: (Default)
I usually watch just a few shows - Smallville, Buffy, Angel, Firefly (alas), and figure skating. Since I don't have much opportunity to channel surf, this meme required some thought. But I wouldn't mind catching part or all of the following:

1. Kind Hearts and Coronets - Sir Alec Guinness playing how many different parts?

2. Arsenic and Old Lace - Carey Grant at his goofy best.

3. Cold Comfort Farm - There will be no butter in Hell! Love Ian Ian McKellen

4. Dead Again - Branagh and Thompson still together, doing Hitchcock

5. The Hudsucker Proxy - The critics panned this one, but it is my favorite of all the Coen brothers movies.

drabble

attolia: (Default)
I posted this to [livejournal.com profile] wednesday100 but thought I should put a copy here so I could find it without having to search through all the other wonderfully depressing entries there.

What He Thought

Jonathan thought he'd be glad when it happened. He'd never
approved of their relationship. He'd never liked that Luthor boy,
never trusted him, despite all the things he did to try to win him
over. Jonathan couldn't be bought like that.

Clark would get over it. He'd been infatuated. Lex could be charming,
gotta give him that, but Clark would find someone else.

When he first found out they were lovers, Jonathan wanted to kill Lex,
wanted to stop his heart from beating, wanted to see that dead look in his
eyes.

Now he can. Jonathan thought he'd be glad.

Unlike the one last week, this came very easily to me, though I never thought I'd be writing Jonathan's point of view.

Nineteen years ago yesterday I turned to the person with whom I'd just had sex for the first time and asked him what he was looking for in a relationship. He reacted as if I had just proposed marriage when I was just trying to figure out if we how compatible we were. I fully expected him to be the first in a long line of college boyfriends that I would cheerfully leave behind when I graduated.

This May we'll have been married eleven years. I've spent just shy of half my life with him and I'm not even close to getting tired of it.

Drabble

attolia: (Default)
I read an awful lot of fanfic and never write anything. Yesterday I saw the drabble challenge that has since inspired the creation of its own community and thought, if it is just 100 words, maybe even I could write something. Of course I made the mistake of reading everyone else's stuff first and got really intimidated. I'm not really happy with what I wrote, but here it is. Have to start somewhere.

"I'm sorry." Clark's voice stopped him at the door. "Lex, I said -"

"I heard you."

"Well ... ?"

"It would help if I knew exactly you are sorry for."

"I'm sorry for lying to you."

Clark walked up behind him.

"I'm sorry I have to keep secrets from you."

Closer.

"I'm sorry I once said Warrior Angel picked his costume to compensate for his
baldness.

Lex turned around, a handsbreadth from Clark. "I forgave THAT one months ago."

"And the rest?"

"I'm ... trying"

"Will you succeed?"

"Of course, Clark." he said, leaning in. "Failing isn't something I do."

I got a blurty about a week ago. But, since all the cool people hang out over here, I decided to give it a try, figuring that if I shelled out $5 for a paid account it might give me an incentive to post more often.

I was seriously miffed that my preferred user name, Achren, was already taken. Had I checked before paying for the account I might not have gone through with it.

Attolia is also a strong person but she is too young and pretty for me to identify with as much as Achren.
