Stuff I liked:

The old devious Lionel is back!

Lana setting up Chloe so she could find out about Clark.

Lex's first personal murder, but even then the final blow wasn't intentional.

No Lois!

The Lionel/Lex interaction would have worked better 3 years ago. Lex should be more competent relative to Lionel now than he was shown to be, but then they have jerked Lex's and Lionel's characterizations around for three years so ...

Stuff I didn't like:

The jumping around in time, leading to

Annoying repeated scenes. Could they at least have only repeated enough to place it in context.

Lex barely reacted when he saw Clark at the end before getting in the limo. He should have been giving him an "I win" smile, or something.

Lana has made Lex stupid.

The possibility that this still isn't the end of the clana.

The preview for next week. I hate fight club stories (Combat was my least favorite Torchwood episode). Besides, didn't they already do a WWF/zoner episode?

A big "yes" to all your pro points. It was good to see Lionel back in evil form again. Though I've never understood what his true feelings/motives toward Clark are. At times he goes to great lengths to protect Clark, and yet here, he threatens Clark's life. Very weird.

I agree that the interaction between Lex and Lionel seemed off. Lex has had the upper hand on his father for some time, so I can't buy him kowtowing to Lionel like that. It might have been true three seasons ago, as you pointed out, but not now.

But, I was glad there was no Lois. *g*

I didn't like the overuse of repetition in this episode either.

Everyone's characterization was fucked up, but I think Lionel's actually bothered me the most in this episode. Most of the other characters acted consistently with how they have been lately, albeit wildly differently from at earlier points in the series (and of course, from how I'd like them to act). Whereas Lionel just keeps swinging back and forth between good and bad, with no support or explanation, on an episodic basis.

All right, now that I read that, it applies to Lex, too, but I think I'm just too beaten down when it comes to Lex. He is so far from the character with whom I first fell in love, I can barely even stand to try drawing connections between his incarnations. Lionel, though, the lack of logic just pisses me off.

He should have been giving him an "I win" smile, or something.

There was a little smirk. I'm telling myself that he couldn't muster up anything more than that while looking directly into Clark's eyes.

Besides, didn't they already do a WWF/zoner episode?

Hmm. Not that I recall, but I've started to think I'm subconsciously blocking out a lot of SV's more recent material. I do remember a Justice League episode along those lines.

They brought in some huge wrestler to play a zoner in Static, but it was a minor B plot to keep Clark out of they way of the A plot.
