attoliaI saw some great stuff on TV last night. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (DVD) was lots of fun. I wasn't expecting a lot, but they really did a good job with it.
Then there was Smallville ...
After some particularly long previouslies we see that Professor Fine has returned. Now he's in Honduras gathering blood samples contaminated with some hemorrhagic fever. Now we know that Lex's rain of blood from Cassandra's vision isn't supposed to happen until he's president, but maybe this is where it is going to come from -- some samples left over after the Fine plot is resolved.
Meanwhile, back in Smallville, Lex has blackmailed a woman, Simone, into hypnotizing and seducing Clark. She has an amulet that has some special powers. Now, why didn't Lex kill or tranq Simone and take the amulet for himself? The he could have been seducing Clark for his secrets and everyone wins. Alas, no.
After giving Lana just enough information to keep her baited, Lex goes after Fine, who tries to convince Lex he's a government agent worried about an alien invasion, and not the kind that can be handled by declaring them all felons. I hate to say this, but in this scene Rosenbaum looks a little wooden compared to Marstars. Mikey has more of the pretty, though.
Simone convinces Clark to dump Lana by arranging for Lana to discover them. But then she decides to keep Clark and his secrets for herself. And they plan to run off to California together.
In come Lois and Chloe to the rescue, leading to the best line in the episode. From Chloe: "My god, I hit Martha Kent!" Probably gave her a skull fracture, too.
Simone and Clark stop at the mansion to kill Lex, leading to the stupidest line in the episode. "Clark! You're hypnotized! That's why you can throw me so far!" Um, I'm going to assume that Lex is just trying to disguise the fact that he already knows about Clark's strength, because, otherwise, no evil genius here.
Chloe arrives with Kryptonite just in time to have Lex hypnotized and told to kill her and then himself (but not told to give Simone the blackmail material). In their struggle for the gun, the amulet and the witness-to-Clark's-secrets are conveniently done away with. They barely pause for a reaction here. It would have been nice to see Clark coming out of the spell and realizing what he'd done. If they needed the time, it could have come from Lionel's part in the previously since he wasn't even in this episode.
Now Clark uses this incident as an excuse to finally break up with Lana. OK. Most of us thought they had already broken up. But since he isn't comfortable explaining his secondary virginity to her, he decides the best thing is to hurt her enough to make her hate him. Well, we all know Clark isn't the smartest Kryptonian on the planet, even if he is the only one.
Martha suggests that maybe this means Clark knows Lana isn't the one. I guess she doesn't know that Clark did tell Lana in the day that never happened. But since that led to Johnathan's death, I can see why Clark wouldn't bring it up.
In the end, Lana runs off to Lex, who plays her beautifully.
Next week: Lana's parents are dead! And she misses them! For an entire episode!
